Sean McLaughlin, VP of news at the E.W. Scripps Co., says the industry is failing to evolve on the content front with its addiction to fires and shootings. To remain competitive in the media industry, publishers should use targeted subscription pricing, understand what the core audience is reading, and estimate the likelihood a customer will subscribe to the digital product.

#1: "Just as airlines sell tickets at different prices, publishers should not have the same price for all subscribers. Individuals vary in their ability and willingness to pay for your products. Forcing one common price on all subscribers overcharges customers that are not able, or are not willing, to pay the stated price, which will cause them to stop their subscriptions."

Spotify-like platforms "face structural challenges that Spotify itself never had to face. Even though there are thousands of record labels, the recording industry is effectively an oligopoly, with three major labels — Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony — controlling the vast majority of the market, and a business consortium, Merlin, effectively representing the rest. The digital media industry, by contrast, is significantly more fragmented and competitive, with few market leaders capable of pulling the rest of their peers in the same direction."

"Content needs to be written for the ear. The problem with the voicebot reading the news is a lack of intonation. It’s all horribly monotone. Without visuals, voice has to work extra hard to tell a story, and that includes highs and lows, correctly pronouncing local street names, and understanding local idiosyncrasies. ... longer content needs to have the emotion of real people delivering the news."
